70031-C Design 3:  The Story of the Candy Cane
There are dozens of legends about the Christian symbolism of the candy cane.  The simple candy cane can teach us a few things about the true meaning of Christmas. The shape symbolizes  the “J” of Jesus’ name, and Christmas is Jesus’ birthday. Turned the other way, it’s a shepherd’s staff, to represent Jesus the Good Shepherd, and also recalls the story of the shepherds who came to visit the baby Jesus. Before He was crucified, Jesus was whipped by the soldiers who made blood-red stripes across His back.  The stripes on the candy cane serve as a reminder that Jesus suffered and died so that we can have everlasting life. The red of the stripes represents Christ’s lifeblood shed for us; white symbolizes the Virgin Birth and the purity of Christ. The sweetness of the candy cane can symbolize Jesus’ love for us that grows sweeter every day.
