Our Mission

Conception Abbey's Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in winterThe Printery House is an apostolic work of the monks and employees of Conception Abbey, a Benedictine monastery situated in the rolling farmlands of northwest Missouri. Our mission is to proclaim the Gospel and share the Christian faith through the creation and distribution of printed products and contemporary religious art.

In making your purchase from The Printery House, you share in the apostolic labors of the monks of Conception Abbey.

May God bless you!

Our Community: Conception Abbey

Since 1873, the Benedictine monks of Conception Abbey have been committed to a life of prayer and work. Five times each day we come together for the Liturgy of the Hours, the public prayers of the church. At midday we gather to celebrate the Eucharist. The rest of the day is devoted to works in service to the church. Prayer and work are our mission.

Conception is a small town of fewer than 100 people located in rural northwest Missouri. While it is mainly a farming community, Conception does have several small businesses including the Printery House. Seventeen miles northwest of Conception lies the town of Maryville which has a population of over 11,000 people and is the nearest town for fast-food restaurants, grocery stores, craft stores, a university, and various other businesses.

Our Abbey church, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, was dedicated in 1891. In 1999 Conception Abbey completed a $9 million Basilica renewal project that spanned two decades and resulted in the Basilica you see today. We believe it will inspire pilgrims and visitors for years to come. We sincerely hope you might find it possible to visit us and experience the spiritual beauty of our renewed Basilica while spending some time in our Abbey Guest Center. You are always welcome!

Other Apostolates

Conception Abbey has four primary apostolates, or works of mission: The Printery House is a publisher of Christian greeting cards, stationery, prayer cards, icons, and other items related to our faith. The monks also operate and staff Conception Seminary College, where young men come to prepare for priestly service in the Catholic Church. The Abbey Guest Center provides opportunities for groups and individuals from throughout the region to stay and pray with us through retreats, workshops, and pilgrimages. Monk priests also engage in pastoral ministry throughout the Midwestern United States.

Our Artists

Over the many decades the Printery House has been in operation we have had some artist monks, but most of our designs come from free lance artists and writers. We buy a license to reproduce art and texts from these individuals, who retain the copyright in their own behalf. We tend to develop a relationship with our artists over a period of time as we come to understand their capabilities and they come to understand our needs. We are always willing and eager to begin this process with new artists.

Our art is very important to the continued success of the Printery House, not only by helping us to retain customer interest through new products, but also by helping us to spread the Good News of God's love through the printed word and quality Christian art.
