Jan Powell

Biographical Information:

Jan's love of beautiful writing began with encouraging words from her fourth grade teacher. After taking a lettering course in college, she began her calligraphy career writing engagement announcements in her dormitory as well as providing lettering for composite sorority and fraternity pictures for a photography studio. Employment at Midwest Research Institute provided training in graphic arts as well as additional experience and training in calligraphy. After leaving MRI, Jan worked from home on mostly graphic arts projects until joining the staff of The Lettering Design Group. There she gained a wealth of experience in a variety of broad pen and pointed pen lettering styles.

Currently, Jan's freelance work consists mainly of calligraphy for individuals, event planners, wedding coordinators, stationers, advertisers, printers, and greeting card companies. In addition to her freelance projects, Jan works part-time as a church secretary and also letters part-time for Ziller of Kansas City, an engrossing studio.

Besides calligraphy, Jan enjoys playing her harp, creating marbled and paste papers and sharing her Kansas City home with a dog, a cat, and a potbellied pig.
